Yonaka Coilover Test and Review – Acura Integra

A test and review of Yonaka Coilovers on an Acura Integra. Demonstrations of body roll and nose dive. Coilovers can allow for lowering a vehicle, and also can reduce body roll with stiffer springs. A coilover gets its name from simply a coil spring over a shock absorber. The coilovers used in the video are Yonaka Motorsports coilovers for a 94-01 Acura Integra.

Toyota’s “Dynamic Force Engine” is designed with torque, power, and efficiency in mind. The whole idea of the engine centers on improving the speed of combustion. If combustion is faster, the engine makes more torque, and it does so more efficiently. So how did they do this?

Well there are numerous features of the engine which encourage quick combustion. It starts with a compression ratio of 13:1 for conventional engines, or 14:1 for their engine paired with hybrid vehicles. They’ve increased the stroke/bore ratio, increased the angle between the intake and exhaust valves, straightened the intake path, and incorporated laser clad valve seats. I swapped the 4.10 final drive ratio in my Honda S2000 for a 4.44 final drive ratio LSD. Does this actually make the car faster? To test, I did three second gear acceleration pulls before and after installing the new differential.

Variables Before & After: – Gear oil used, 75W-90 vs 75W-140 – New differential pinion and ring and pinion gear (may not be fully broken in). – 60 deg F for 4.1 testing, 67 deg F for 4.44 testing.

Centrifugal Clutch – Explained

How does a centrifugal clutch work? What is a centrifugal clutch? Centrifugal clutches are used in go karts, mopeds, chain saws, lawn mowers, and many other small engine powered devices. They work by using the principle of centrifugal force to have a clutch shoe apply a friction pad against the clutch housing, thus rotating a device which requires torque to run. At idle speed, springs hold the clutch shoes in so that there is no torque transfer to the clutch housing.

People are often underwhelmed with the driving experience of a CVT, and initially, many CVTs were underwhelming. Toyota is changing that, with numerous improvements to their CVT to make shifts quicker, more precise, and more engaging to drive. And it’s no longer just using a belt for accelerating. Starting from a stop, the CVT switches over to a direct gear drive, much like starting in first gear in a manual transmission. As the vehicle speed increases, the first gear is dropped and it switches over to belt drive, letting the CVT handle the higher speeds.
